Every so often a PMO book comes along and you think, yes, this is one that definitely should be on every self-respecting PMO professional’s bookshelf.
That book is the The PMO Lifecycle and it’s written by Bill Dow who leads a session at this year’s PMO Conference called “The PMO Lifecycle – The Balanced PMO – Using Maturity Models and Dashboards to Track and Report Strategic and Project Value”
You can also catch Bill’s one day PMO Class the day before the conference on the 12th June, the class, called “How to Build, Run and Shut Down a PMO” also comes with a free copy of the book and a whole load more learning besides.
I first came across Bill over at PMI’s PMO Symposium a couple of years back, he’s also written another book which comes highly recommended called Project Management Communication Tools.
The PMO Lifecycle – Building, Running and Shutting Down
Why do PMO people like this book? There’s simply a lot of ground covered with really practical insights, examples, tips and tricks. It’s like a treasure trove and it’s useful to any PMO professional regardless of the level you’re at.
There are templates, techniques to use, questions to ask yourself and answer as you work through, not only the book, but your career.
It’s structured in a way that kicks off with PMO fundamentals then moves into the setting up,running and closing down parts of the PMO lifecycle.
You can dip in, if for example, you’re looking for something specifically related to resource management. In this case you’ll come up with resource management knowledge area insights (PMI BoK based); resource management as a PMO process; when, where and when to provide resource management processes and managing PMO resources.
So if there’s one PMO related book where you’re looking for real practical help on when, where and how to do this PMO stuff, this is the one for you.
The Building, Running and Shutting Down a PMO
